Start Here — The One Fact That Changes Everything
The adults do not damage anything. The larvae do all of it. Every effective decision about carpet beetles follows from that single sentence, and almost every wasted dollar comes from ignoring it.

Finding adults on a windowsill tells you there is a breeding source somewhere in the building. It does not tell you the windowsill is the problem. Adults seek light and fly toward windows when they emerge, so a cluster of dead beetles on a south-facing sill is a clue pointing upward and inward — frequently toward an attic.
Track the larvae, not the adults.

What the larva actually looks like

Larvae molt repeatedly as they grow, leaving brown, shell-like, bristly cast skins behind. Those cast skins are often more abundant and easier to find than live larvae — and they persist long after the larva has moved on or died. A drawer or closet corner full of what look like empty larval shells is a confirmed carpet beetle history, whether or not anything is alive in it today.

Carpet Beetle or Clothes Moth?
Both eat keratin. Both damage wool and silk. The controls overlap but are not identical, and the evidence they leave behind is clearly different.

Is there webbing on the fabric? Webbing means moth. No webbing but bristly brown shells means carpet beetle.
Which way does the adult fly? Toward the window in daylight means carpet beetle. Fluttering away from light means clothes moth.
That pair of questions resolves most cases before anyone opens a product catalog.
Finding the Actual Source
Extension sources are blunt about it. Michigan State: carpet beetles are difficult to control because many times it is difficult to locate the origin of the infestation. Arizona Extension: they are among the most difficult indoor pests to manage because of their ability to find food in obscure places and disperse widely through a building.
And the point everyone misses — UC Riverside notes that originally infested materials may continue to be sources of infestation after carpets and other infested articles have been treated. Treating the carpet and skipping the attic is how an infestation comes back.

UC Riverside documents a specific mechanism worth knowing: cast skins and fecal pellets from insects in the attic can drop into the rooms below — through gaps around beams, through perforated ceiling tile, and around light fixtures. If you are finding cast skins on furniture or floors with no local source, look up before you look sideways.
The North Alabama angle
Two regional factors make attic-and-void sources considerably more likely here than the national literature implies.

Put plainly: a North Alabama house that had a lady beetle problem last November has been stocking a food supply in the attic all winter. Spring beetles on the windowsill are the receipt.
The Inspection Sequence
Start where you found them — but do not stop there. Note whether you are finding adults (toward windows) or larvae and cast skins (near the food source). They mean different things.
Lift carpet edges. University of Kentucky recommends needle-nose pliers to lift wall-to-wall carpet off the tack strip along baseboards. Larvae favor the lower edges of rugs and carpeting.
Inspect clothing at seams, folds and creases — cuffs and collars especially, where larvae prefer to feed.
Check under and inside upholstered furniture, and inside floor vents and ducts where pet hair and lint accumulate.
Go into the attic. Look for nests, accumulated dead insects, and cast skins. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that usually solves the case.
Check vents, eaves, soffits and the chimney for bird nests.
Consider your own recent history. Winter cluster flies or lady beetles? A rodent problem? Birds nesting on the building? A wasp nest treated inside a wall?
Check stored woolens, furs, taxidermy, hide rugs, feather items, plus old spices, cereals, seed and dry pet food.
Do not overlook cut flowers — adults feed on pollen and are commonly carried indoors on blooms.
Rutgers recommends placing sticky traps around windows in spring to catch adult varied carpet beetles moving in or out, and food-baited sticky traps around floor perimeters and corners to monitor larval activity. This is how you map where activity concentrates instead of guessing.
The Rash That Is Not Bed Bugs
The dermatology literature is explicit: beetles in the family Dermestidae do not bite humans. They have been reported to cause skin reactions typical of an allergic reaction. There is no puncture and no feeding site, because nothing has fed on you. What you are experiencing is your own immune response to a foreign particle.

Why it gets misdiagnosed — and what that costs
The CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases published a cluster of 11 patients from 7 families in southern France who sought dermatology consultation for weeks of unexplained skin lesions ultimately traced to Anthrenus larval hairs. The authors concluded that dermatitis caused by these larvae is underdiagnosed or confused with dermatitis caused by bed bugs or fleas — and that those erroneous diagnoses can lead to insecticide use and thus to unnecessary, tiring, expensive and toxic procedures.

If one person in the house is covered in itchy bumps and nobody else has a single spot, that pattern points away from bed bugs and toward an allergic sensitivity. The CDC paper's authors note this directly. Combine it with lesions under clothing rather than on sleep-exposed skin, and no central blister, and you have three independent signals pointing the same direction.
This section describes what the medical literature reports so you can have a better-informed conversation — not so you can self-diagnose. A persistent unexplained rash is a question for a physician or dermatologist. Bring the insect evidence with you in a sealed bag; identification of the specimen is described in the literature as a key step.
Do not spray insecticide at a rash of unknown cause. That is precisely the "unnecessary, tiring, expensive and toxic" outcome the CDC paper warns about.
Control — The Order of Operations
Rutgers puts the whole strategy in one sentence: the first step in the control of carpet beetles is to find the source of infestation. Everything below assumes you have done Part 3 first.
Locate the source. Nothing else works reliably until this is done.
Eliminate it. Remove the nest, the carcass, the dead insect accumulation. Arizona Extension: first eliminate the obvious — accumulations of lint, hair, dead insects and other debris that serve as food.
Discard badly infested items. Extension guidance is direct about this. Some things are not worth saving.
Clean thoroughly and repeatedly. Vacuuming removes larvae, eggs, cast skins — and the hastisetae that cause the rash.
Treat salvageable items by laundering, dry cleaning, or thermal methods. See the table below.
Exclude. Seal the vent, screen the soffit, close the entry the bird or rodent used. Otherwise you are scheduling the sequel.
Monitor with sticky traps to confirm you actually got it.

Unsealing a frozen item in a warm room produces condensation on and inside it. On wool, silk, leather, books and taxidermy, that can do more damage than the beetles did. Bag it, freeze it, then let it come back to room temperature still sealed. Only then open it.
Insecticides — the honest position
Surface sprays
University of Kentucky: insecticide sprays are often of limited use against carpet beetles. Larvae feed in obscure, inaccessible places — voids, ducts, under carpet edges, inside nests — where surface sprays do not reach.
Single treatments
Pupae resist many pesticides. That is the mechanical reason one-and-done treatments fail and a return visit is part of any credible plan.
Sanitation and exclusion first
Arizona Extension frames success as integrating sanitation and exclusion and, in some cases, insecticides. Note the order and the qualifier. Chemicals are an adjunct, not the plan.
Ask about the attic
A treatment plan that does not include an attic and void inspection is not a plan — it is a recurring charge. Ask directly: will you inspect the attic, vents and voids, and is source removal included or extra?
If a product is used, the label governs. It specifies where a product may and may not be applied, and it is the law.
Prevention
- Vacuum regularly — especially carpet edges, along baseboards, and under heavy furniture that never moves.
- Launder before storing. Larvae prefer soiled materials; sweat, food stains and body oils add nutrients. A garment worn once and stored unwashed is a high-risk item.
- Store woolens and furs in sealed containers, not open closets.
- Check stored items annually. Michigan State recommends checking woolens undisturbed for over a year for damage and signs of insects.
- Remove abandoned bird, rodent, wasp and bee nests in or near the house.
- Keep pet bedding areas clean.
- Screen vents and seal soffit and eave gaps to keep birds and rodents from nesting.
- Inspect used furniture, rugs and clothing before bringing them inside.
- Check cut flowers — adults feed on pollen and hitchhike indoors on blooms.
- Address overwintering insect pressure. Fewer lady beetles and stink bugs dying in your attic means less carpet beetle food next spring.

Most North Alabama households discover carpet beetles the same way: a handful of tiny mottled beetles on a sunny windowsill in early spring. That is emergence, not arrival.
